Oracle Data Guard Overview:

Oracle designed Data Guard for important business continuity need which provides data protection and disaster recovery features.

It is used to protect failures, disasters, corruptions and errors of enterprise data.

Data Guard consists of one primary database and many standby databases which can be located at miles away disaster recovery sites or can be located in same building or in same city.

Standby databases are maintained by Data Guard as transactional consistent copies of primary database (production database). When primary database(production database) becomes unavailable due any reason like planned or unplanned outage then data Guard can switch standby to the primary role( production database) minimizing downtime and preventing data loss.

Data Guard can be integrated with Real Application Cluster (RAC) and RMAN to provide high availability and data protection.
